You likely know how important it is to brush your teeth twice daily. However, do you know how to properly care for your toothbrush? Caring for your toothbrush properly allows it to properly care for your smile. Read on for some toothbrush care advice from the practice of Suave Dental Group.

A toothbrush should be replaced every three to four months. This is because a worn-out toothbrush will not be able to clean your teeth as well. If your toothbrush bristles become frayed before you have had it for three months, replace your toothbrush sooner.

Don’t Share
Sharing a toothbrush means the sharing of germs, which should be avoided. If two people share a toothbrush, they both become more at risk for infections. This is of even more concern if one of the involved parties has a compromised immune system or a contagious disease.

Cleaning & Storage
After you brush your teeth, thoroughly rinse your toothbrush with tap water to remove toothpaste and debris. Then, store your toothbrush upright out in the open so that it can air out. Avoid storing your toothbrush in a closed container as much as possible, as bacteria loves moist, dark areas.

Don’t Contaminate
If you store more than one toothbrush in one area, make sure that they don’t touch each other. This helps prevent cross contamination.
